Welcome to Institute for Metal Forming Technology

The Institute for Metal Forming Technology (IFU) was established in the winter semester 1958/59 and since then has been one of the production engineering institutes at the University of Stuttgart. Over the years, numerous research projects and development work in the fields of sheet and bulk metal forming as well as the development of new forming processes have been carried out in the laboratories and facilities of the institute. In recent decades, a large part of these research and development projects have resulted in numerous dissertations which have further advanced various major developments in these fields in Germany, in Europe or even at world level and which today belong to the "state of the art" in forming technology.

The Institute for Metal Forming Technology is distinguished by its strategic positioning in the production technology environment of the university. In addition, it has far above-average equipment in the test field, the laboratory areas and the press, plant and measuring technology. In cooperation with other institutes of forming technology in Germany, through cooperation in scientific associations and organizations and through its international commitment, the IFU has gained an international reputation in both basic and application-oriented research.
